A pretty neat feature in TypePad is that you can do a search and replace across your whole blog. This is really handy if you have a bad habit of misspelling something! But it has no “undo” function so it needs to be operated with care.

First, we’ll have a look at how to do a search of your blog.

In the “Manage” tab of your blog, you’ll notice a search bar in the upper right hand corner. This is available whether you’re listing posts, pages, comments or trackbacks but it disappears once you are in the “Compose” tab.

As TypePad is also your hosting service, it is also their job to make backups of your data in case anything happens to their servers, but you should always have your own backup copy JUST IN CASE.

Make a habit of doing a regular backup – at the very least, once a week. The best habit is to create a backup after you have added a new blog post or page. Back ups are part of your blog insurance.

If you do any big changes to your blog, it’s a good idea to create a backup first.

You can also use your back up to export your TypePad blog to another service (the instructions will depend on which service, you’re exporting to).

It’s important to note that TypePad only backs up the text of your blog posts so it doesn’t back up posts and it doesn’t back up images – so make sure you keep a copy of any images you upload to your blog and any pages.

To make a back up, click on the Import/Export link in the Manage tab.

Setting up your blog’s preferences

The Front Page of Your Blog

Usually, blogs display the most recent posts on the front page – but you can choose to have a page as your front page – for example, introducing yourself and highlighting the best posts for a new visitor. Having a Front Page can work well sometimes, but usually it’s safer and more reliable to just go with the default option of displaying most recent posts.

Go to the Authors section in the Configure tab of your blog.

You will find yourself listed as an author. If you want to add any more then scroll down to “Invite Additional Authors and you can fill in their name, email address and set an access level.

Set up Publicity

Go to the Publicity window in your Configure tab.

By default, your blog is set up to “Publicize this Weblog”.
