Charity Spotlight: Kiva

We try to keep Sundays dedicated to the other stuff that supports our business lives but that which often gets ignored – Goal Setting, Productivity, Motivation, Review, Health (we’ve categorised these under “Constant Progress”) and Higher Purpose (giving back to the community and feeding your soul).

Kiva is one of the few charities where donors often get their donations back. This is because Kiva is a non-profit organisation that facilitates micro loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries….

If you’d like to read the rest of this post, I have now moved to Web for Small Business and I am slowly moving my posts over there too. If you liked my posts here please consider subscribing to my new blog.

Grab these 17 ideas to grow your blog

If you run an online news site, Jonathan Dube from CyberJournalist.net has some great ideas for improving it in 101 Ways to improve your News Site. If you run a regular blog or website, many of these ideas are transferable.

I’ve picked out some of my favourite tips and given some suggestions how this could apply to your blog or website.

(1) Post a form at the end of a breaking news story asking witnesses to send in details of what they saw — and then add the information you can verify to the story.

These links are all over my local paper’s website. You may not be in business of chasing up witnesses to breaking news stories, but many of the blog posts and website pages you make could be made better by asking readers to share their tips, experiences and ideas. If you write a post on your favourite chocolate chip recipe, ask your readers to add their favourite chocolate chip recipe in the comments

(8) Give everyone in your company one day off a month to work on whatever project they want or simply just brainstorm new ideas

For many people now, their blogs ARE their business and do replace either part time or full time jobs. But as Michael Gerber in the E-myth commented on running bricks and mortar businesses, you need to work ON your business, on just IN it. For your blog or website, you should take at least one day out, away from what you normally do and websites you normally visit to think of fresh ideas. Google gives their employees time each week to work on some cool project or idea outside of their normal work and it seems to be working for them- that’s how Gmail is believed to have started. What is internet marketing?

Internet Marketing means a lot of different things depending on who you’re speaking to… it’s a term we use a lot but I thought I’d take the time to see if I could define it.

The narrow definition of Internet Marketing (which is still rather vast) is it’s any form of promotion done online (including email marketing) to raise the awareness of products or services.

Sometimes Internet Marketing is used to describe a type of business that has developed from mail order and direct mail marketing – that is, businesses that attempt to harness the amazing efficiencies the internet has given to find and speak directly to the consumer. These businesses use many of the tricks from their pre-internet heritage like long sales letters and psychological triggers. They can also be incredibly innovative and have developed a whole lot of new techniques like Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to compete in what can be a very competitive field. When used to describe this sort of business, Internet Marketing has been known to include all this type of business’s activities including the market research required to discover products and services to develop, the development of the product, the online selling processes and even the business structure. The entrepreneurs running these businesses are often called Internet Marketers – even though, obviously, running any sort of business, even an online one, will involve a lot more than just marketing. Criticisms of this type of business is that they too often peddle dodgy products, get rich schemes or just sell how to do more internet marketing.

At the core of it, Internet Marketing is both about harnessing the opportunities of the internet and overcoming its challenges to find and speak to the right audience in the most persuasive way.

The internet has given ordinary people without the huge advertising budgets of major corporations the opportunity to sell to large audiences. It has also made the marketplace so much more efficient because a worldwide audience can be tapped into – an audience that is now up to at least 1 billion people (1).

At the same time, the main challenge of the internet is that it is a very very big place. In 2000, there were a reported 7 million unique websites in the world, in 2007 the estimates were at 15 – 30 BILLION websites!

So the role of Internet Marketing is to find out who the best audience is for whatever it is you’re promoting or selling, attract their attention and then (hopefully) persuade enough of them to do what you want them to do. There are many techniques used in Internet Marketing and they are constantly evolving because the internet is constantly evolving.

It’s important to note that Internet Marketing isn’t all about short term sales for products and services. It can be also be used to build a person or a company’s social standing or reputation in the long term. While building long term reputation is good for business, it can also be used for other more lofty goals like promoting a charity or a worthwhile cause. It can help you meet new people who are interested in the same things as you, or it can help you find business partners. If you’re an academic, some savvy internet marketing used appropriately can help raise your research profile.

Internet Marketing is often shortened to IM (not to be confused with Instant Messaging which is also commonly shortened to IM).

When was the last time you clicked on an ad?

I just clicked on one – and it was a Coke ad of all things. I don’t usually drink Coke.

But this one had a blank Coke bottle (you know the shape of the bottle is actually trademarked) with an invitation to design my own coke bottle – so I clicked on it. (The Design a Coke site allows you to make your own design, mash up other people’s designs and share your creations with the world.)

The ad had mystery and an invitation for me to do something that looked like fun. It stood out from all the other boring banner ads.

When you click on an ad, have a think to yourself – why did I click on that ad? What was it about it that intrigued me? Answer that question and see how you can apply it to your own advertsing as well as the content you create (remember your blog posts also advertise for people to read them).

So when was the last time you clicked on an ad and what made you do it? Did it teach you anything?
